Careers for chemists and materials scientists are projected to grow 6% from 2022 to 2032, outpacing other occupational fields, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor & Statistics. Studying for a Chemistry minor equips you to thrive in graduate studies and pursue diverse careers in scientific research, education, healthcare, and beyond. Molloy graduates have secured roles across biological sciences and healthcare, with many accepted into prestigious Medical, Dental, and Physician Assistant programs.

What To Expect From a Minor in Chemistry at Molloy

If you’re interested in pursuing scientific or healthcare careers, the Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science department offers a minor in Chemistry that might be right for you. By completing the Pre-Professional Medical Programs and General Biology track within the Biology B.S. degree, you'll automatically earn a Chemistry minor. This minor is also open to students from any major.

To earn the Chemistry minor, you'll need to complete 18 credits of chemistry courses. These courses include semesters of Inorganic Chemistry and two semesters of Organic Chemistry. It's worth noting that students pursuing a Chemistry minor cannot also minor in Physical Science.

Required Coursework for Chemistry Minors

Below are the requirements to earn a chemistry minor at Molloy:

Required Courses - 18 Credits

  • CHE 1320 Inorganic Chemistry I – 4 credits
  • CHE 1330 Inorganic Chemistry II - 5 credits
  • CHE 2000 Organic Chemistry I – 4 credits
  • CHE 2010 Organic Chemistry II – 5 credits

If you’re considering pursuing a minor in Chemistry at Molloy University, it’s important to note that:

  • Biology majors in certain tracks (e.g., General Biology or Professional, Medical Graduate Studies) will take Chemistry courses as part of their program. Students who earn at least a "C" grade in these Chemistry courses will also earn a minor in Chemistry, which will be noted on their transcript when they graduate.
  • Students in the Biology Pre-Allied Medical Programs Track can choose to add the Chemistry Minor by taking two specific Chemistry courses in addition to other required courses.
  • Students in the Earth and Environmental Science major, Geoscience or Environmental Biology concentration can choose to add the minor by taking part II of Organic Chemistry.

Undergraduate Admissions Criteria

Admission to Molloy University requires a high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Specific entrance requirements include graduation from high school or equivalent with 20.5 units, comprising of:

  • English - 4
  • Foreign Language - 3
  • Mathematics - 3
  • Social Studies - 4
  • Science - 3

If you’re home-schooled, you must obtain a letter from your local school district officials confirming that you’ve received a "substantially equivalent" education to district high school students or take and pass a Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC), formally known as a GED.

A Simple Process for Transfer Applicants

Transfer students are welcome into this program! If you’re a transfer student, you must send official transcripts from your previous accredited institutions and can arrange credit evaluation interviews before applying. If you lack an associate’s degree or higher, you’ll need to provide a high school transcript for proof of graduation.
