Molloy University, Rockville Centre campus. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Master of Science program will be hosting its Fifth Annual Interdisciplinary Mental Health Conference on: "Fostering Cultural Humility: Current Multicultural and Diversity Practices for Helping Professionals" to be held on April 20, 2018 from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. for 4 CE hours at the Rockville Centre campus. In addition, there will be two Optional Post-Conference Workshops offered from  1:00 - 4:00 p.m.  for an addition 2 CE hours.

Program Background and Description

Join us for our truly unique Mental Health Conference featuring two internationally acclaimed and dynamic keynote speakers on the topics of multiculturalism and diversity, and social justice and advocacy within the counseling and mental health fields. Learn how you can build reciprocal helping relationships with individuals from marginalized and oppressed groups across micro and macro levels. Hone your clinical skills and deepen your curiosity about this increasingly timely topic by listening to our amazing speakers during their morning lectures. You can opt to stay for our luncheon and afternoon break-out sessions and interact with one of our speakers in a more intimate, interpersonal format during the afternoon workshops. In order to maximize your time with us, the afternoon's break-out sessions are designed to build on the information learned during each speaker's featured morning talk. 

The first half of the conference will provide 4 CEU credits and feature Dr. Jeffrey Kottler for a keynote lecture on: Changing People's Lives While Transforming Your Own: Paths to Social Justice and Advocacy, followed by Dr. Anneliese Singh for a keynote lecture on: Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling and Advocacy: What Works in the "Real" World?   The second half of the conference provides attendees with an additional 2 CEU's and provides a luncheon followed by either Dr. Singh's workshop entitled: What if Trans Liberation is for Everybody?: Moving from Affirmative to Liberatory Counseling with All Genders, or Dr. Kottler's Workshop on: The Secrets of Exceptional Counselors. Each afternoon workshop with lunch will be limited to between 60-100 registered guests, in order to provide a more intimate and interpersonal setting. Guests may choose to stay just for the morning portion or the entire day. For details on each keynote and workshop presentations, please see below. Jeffrey A. Kottler, Ph.D. - Keynote Speaker Bio
Jeffrey A. Kottler is one of the most prominent authors in the fields of counseling, psychotherapy, health, and education, having written over 90 books about a wide range of subjects. Some of his most highly regarded works include On Being a Therapist, Creative Breakthroughs in Therapy, Bad Therapy, The Client Who Changed Me, Divine Madness, Stories We've Heard, Stories We've Told: Life-Changing Narratives in Therapy and Everyday Life, The Therapist in the Real World, Relationships in Counseling and the Counselor's Life, Therapy Over 50, On Being a Master Therapist, Secrets of Exceptional Counselors.

Jeffrey has also written several successful trade books about a variety of psychological themes: Private Moments, Secret Selves, Divine Madness: Ten Stories of Creative Struggle, Change: What Leads to Personal Transformation, What You Don't Know About Leadership But Probably Should, and the best-selling true crime book, The Last Victim: Inside the Minds of Serial Killers that was produced as a feature film (Dear Mr. Gacy).Jeffrey has been a counselor, therapist, supervisor, and educator for 45 years, having worked a preschool, middle school, mental health center, crisis center, hospital, medical school, refugee resettlement agency, nongovernmental organization (NGO), university, community college, private practice, and disaster relief settings. He is also the founder of Empower Nepali Girls, a foundation that supports and mentors at-risk children He has served as a Fulbright scholar and senior lecturer in Peru and Iceland, as well as worked as a visiting professor in New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Nepal. Jeffrey is Professor Emeritus of Counseling at California State University, Fullerton and is Clinical Professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the Baylor College of Medicine. Anneliese A. Singh, Ph.D, LPC - Keynote Speaker Bio
Anneliese A. Singh is a Professor and Associate Dean for Diversity Equity, and Inclusion in the College of Education at the University of Georgia. Dr. Singh has contributed to many counseling and psychological practice guidelines and competencies, including the recent revision of the ACA Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies, the ASGW Multicultural and Social Justice Principles for Group Workers, and the ACA Competencies for Counseling Transgender People. She is highly prolific, and has written over 100 peer-reviewed articles and chapters and 4 books in the areas of social justice counseling and LGBTQQ+ counseling. Dr. Singh is co-author of Social Justice Counseling in Group Work, Affirmative Counseling and Psychological Practice with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Clients, the Queer and Trans Resilience Workbook, and the upcoming Healing from Racism Workbook. She is a Past-President of the Association of LGBT Issues in Counseling. In 2009, Dr. Singh co-founded the Georgia Safe Schools Coalition to work on the intersection of heterosexism, racism, sexism, and other oppressions in Georgia schools. She also founded the Trans Resilience Project to translate findings from her 15 years of research on the resilience that trans and nonbinary people develop across the lifespan and across multiple identities to navigate societal oppression. Dr. Singh passionately believes in and strives to live by the ideals of Dr. King's beloved community, as well as Audre Lorde's reminder that "without community, there is no liberation". The conference will be given in the Madison Theatre in the Public Square Building at Molloy's Rockville Centre campus located at 1000 Hempstead Avenue, Rockville Centre, NY, 11571. The campus is located about 40 minutes east of New York City by train on Long Island.

Continuing Education Credit

Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs)
Molloy University, Division of Continuing Education & Professional Development is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors. #MHC-0052. This conference is offered for four (4) CE contact hours and the post-conference workshop is approved for two (2) CE contact hours for Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs). Further information on the new requirements can be found on the following NY State webpage: http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/mhp/NYS Licensed Creative Arts Therapists (LCATs) 
Molloy University is an approved provider for CE credit from NY State for Licensed Creative Arts Therapists: approval number CAT-0015. This conference is offered for four (4) CE contact hours and the post-conference workshop is approved for two (2) CE contact hours for Licensed Creative Arts Therapists.

Social Work Continuing Education Credit
CEU's for NYS Licensed Social Workers: Molloy University, Continuing Education & Professional Development Social Work CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0110. This conference is offered for four (4) CE contact hours and the post-conference workshop is approved for two (2) CE contact hours for NYS Licensed Social Workers.

Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselors (CASAC)
CE credit through the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (NYS-OASAS) has been applied for for four (4) CE contact hours and the post-conference workshop for two (2) CE contact hours in the following areas and approval is pending:

Nursing Continuing Education Credit
Molloy University, Continuing Education Department, is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the New Jersey State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses' Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This conference is offered for four (4) CE contact hours and the post-conference workshop is approved for two (2) CE contact hours of nursing continuing education.

Exhibitor Information
A limited number of exhibitors will be permitted for the conference. The fee to exhibit is $200 ($100 non-profit) for the day, from 8:00 a.m. - 1 p.m. Space is limited, so only 6 exhibitors will be able to attend.  Exhibitors will be provided with a 6 ft. table and one conference admission (additional admission: $50 each).  The exhibit tables will be in the lobby of the Madison Theatre (where the breakfast, all of the sessions and the morning break will be held)
