Your enrollment status is an important factor in determining your financial aid eligibility.  You don’t have to be full time to be eligible for all forms of financial aid, but your enrollment status may impact some awards.   For example, to be eligible for the NYS TAP award, you must be a full-time student (registered for at least 12 credits).  If you are not full time, you will lose your TAP funding.  (As a part-time student, you may be eligible for part-time TAP and/or APTS.)  Likewise, the amount of Federal PELL you receive is based on your enrollment status.  A full-time student who is eligible for Federal PELL will receive more than a part-time student.  You must be at least half time (at least 6 credits) to be eligible for your federal loans.  Other financial aid may be affected as well.

Your enrollment status is determined by the number of applicable credits for which you are registered as follows:

12 or more credits            Full Time

    9-11 credits                     Three-quarter Time

    6-8 credits                       Half Time

1-5 credits                       Less than Half Time

All credits must be applicable to your degree—meaning they are on your list of courses required to graduate with your degree.

Each semester, student accounts are reviewed for non-applicable coursework.  This review takes place after the add/drop period. Students are notified if they are enrolled in a non-applicable course and how it will affect their financial aid eligibility.

If you receive notification, please reach out to the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible.

Please carefully investigate the implications of adding a minor.  It does not necessarily guarantee that credits are applicable to the degree.
