Mission Statement

At Molloy University, dedicated social work faculty create interactive, responsive, educational pathways that extend beyond traditional learning environments.  The program promotes professional values and the application of theoretical, evidence-based knowledge and skills, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics that contribute to human well-being.  Through transformative education, students are equipped to address social issues at the local, regional, and global levels for historically marginalized populations.  In partnership with diverse client systems, they serve as advocates and advance equity, inclusion and belonging.  The social work program cultivates generalist practitioners to serve as change agents and actively challenge social, racial, economic, and environmental injustice.

Program Goals

The Department of Social Work program goals are derived from the mission statement. They specify the intentions of the program to prepare practitioners to:

  1. Demonstrate the development of a professional self, capable of thinking critically, solving problems, and using ethical standards and self-awareness to guide their practice.
  2. Demonstrate the increased capacity to be more politically knowledgeable, culturally competent and macro-minded professionals, able to incorporate a social action-orientation as part of their full range of capabilities as generalist practitioners.
  3. Demonstrate a competent practice orientation, displaying professional written and oral communication skills, an ability to collaborate in practice, and an ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  4. Demonstrate competence as a generalist practitioner, promoting social and human well-being by utilizing a range of assessment, engagement, intervention and evaluation methods in practice with all client systems.

The goals of the program highlight the importance of developing generalist practitioners who are able to think critically, engage their community and clients systems, advocate for social justice, practice professionalism, and develop their micro, mezzo and macro practice skills.

University Land Acknowledgment

We pause to acknowledge that Molloy University is located on lands once home to Indigenous Peoples, including the Lenape, the Montaukett Indian Nation, and Indigenous Peoples who resided in the Massapequa, Merrick, and Rockaway territories.  We recognize the long and complex history that has brought us to these lands, and we seek to understand the ongoing impact of settler colonialism and its influence on the cultures and heritages of Indigenous Peoples.  We remember and acknowledge our connections to Indigenous Peoples and appreciate the opportunity to live and learn on this land.  We honor Indigenous Peoples of the past, today, and generations to come.

Molloy University would like to thank Sandi Brewster-Walker, member of the Montaukett Indian Nation, and Dr. John A. Strong, American historian, who helped us with our Land Acknowledgement.
