The Communication Sciences and Disorders Department and the Office of Continuing Education at Molloy University are pleased to welcome Zoe Thijs, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Molloy University, who will be presenting the topics, "Speech Analysis on a Budget I: Essentials for High-Quality Acoustic Recordings in Speech-Language Pathology” on Tuesday October 8, 2024 and "Speech Analysis on a Budget II: Acoustics in Assessment and Treatment in Speech-Language Pathology” on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Each program is offered for .2 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate level; Professional area). A certificate of completion will be issued at the conclusion of the each session.

Speech Analysis on a Budget: Essentials for High-Quality Acoustic Recordings in Speech-Language Pathology

In this workshop, we will delve into the value of acoustic recordings and analysis across various domains of speech-language pathology. You will learn how to make high-quality acoustic recordings without breaking the bank. We will cover topics including equipment and software selection, optimal settings, and environmental adaptations.

Learning objectives: After this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of speech recordings in speech-language pathology
  • Define concepts related to the properties of sound
  • Explain important factors associated with selecting hardware and software for high-quality acoustic recordings
  • Construct an appropriate recording environment for high-quality acoustic recordings
  • Build an appropriate recording set-up, including hardware and software

Speech Analysis on a Budget: Acoustics in Assessment and Treatment in Speech-Language Pathology

In this workshop, we will explore how speech-language pathologists can leverage acoustic measurements in assessment and treatment, focusing on voice and voice disorders. You will gain insights into selecting appropriate measures for your assessments, calculating them, and interpreting them. Additionally, we will look into biofeedback strategies to enhance client outcomes. And once again, all on a budget. Please note that you do not have to attend the workshop on October 8th to attend this workshop.

Learning objectives: After this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Define concepts related to graphic representations and analysis of sound
  • Define common measurements used for assessment and treatment in speech-language pathology
  • Interpret common measurements used for assessment and treatment in speech-language pathology
  • Analyze sound files with common measurements used for assessment and treatment in speech-language pathology

About the Presenter
Zoë Thijs is an Assistant Professor at Molloy University since the Fall of 2022. She attained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in speech-language pathology at Ghent University in Belgium. She continued her education in the United States and completed both her doctorate and her postdoctoral experience at Texas Christian University. Dr. Thijs’s expertise focuses on voice and voice disorders, specifically in people with Parkinson’s disease. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented both nationally and internationally. Dr. Thijs’ expertise in the use of instrumentation is valuable not only in her research, but also to practicing clinicians working in any area of speech and voice production.

Dates and Times
The programs will take place on Tuesday October 8, 2024; 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, November 5, 2024; 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Both will be online live via Zoom.

These programs will be conducted as "live" online courses using Zoom. They will be held on the same dates and times as indicated above.   It is recommended that you log onto the sessions using  a laptop, PC, or Mac.   You will receive the Zoom link to join the programs via email within a week of the date of the programs. The program will not be recorded and you will need to attend live in order to participate and receive ASHA CEUs.

Communication Sciences and Disorders Department

Molloy's Communication Sciences and Disorders Department continues to offer a comprehensive undergraduate program in Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology and also offers an M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology. The M.S. program in speech-language pathology at Molloy University is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Additionally, our Speech, Language and Hearing Center is located off campus in a new facility and continues to serve the community by providing an array of evaluation and treatment services.
