Lillian Eyre, PhD, MT-BC, Associate Visiting Professor, Temple University, Fellow of the Association of Music and Imagery, Licensed Professional Counsellor, PA, MARI Practitioner

Session Title: Priestley’s Depth Work with a Person with Schizophrenia: Reconstructive AMT from a Trauma-Informed Perspective

Session Description:
This presentation will take a retrospective look at Eyre’s (2007) reconstruction of Priestley’s work with “Curtis” which appeared in Essays on Analytical Music Therapy (1994). In current mental health practices, we are more than ever aware of the potential to do harm to clients, and we seek to practice from a trauma-informed approach. This presentation will follow the unfolding of Priestley’s work with Curtis from the perspective of current understandings of best practices in working with PWS in individual therapy. The speaker will integrate Priestley’s work with Curtis along with excerpts from her AMT-informed improvisational work with a PWS, demonstrating how, for both these persons, the AMT approach provided safety and adhered to current concepts of trauma-informed practices. In addition, AMT provided these persons with the opportunity to reflect on their lives, and through the lived experience of improvisation, to construct fuller narrative accounts that included their strengths and challenges, leading them to the construction of richer present lives and a vision for their future.
