This Molloy student’s internship is changing the game for businesses in Rockville Centre
By Kelsie Radziski, LI Herald
Morgan Curran is a senior at Molloy University who is currently interning with the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce, where she has been since December. The connection was made through the “communiversity” initiative to foster a relationship between the college and the community. Curran is the first intern from Molloy to work with the Chamber through this initiative.
Q: Tell me about your academic experience at Molloy University.
A: I’m a business management major with a minor in economics, and I’ve taken accounting, I’ve taken an economics class, I’ve taken them all. My favorite classes, though, so far have been entrepreneurship. There, me and my group created a fake project of an actual tangible item that we would...pretend to get investors into it. That was really interesting.
I loved my HR class. Learning about the background of the business, who was there to support the employers, has been really interesting. I’m taking Capstone currently, and Capstone is great. We are working with a nonprofit called Nosh Delivers [in Glen Cove], so we are trying to come up with volunteer ideas in order to boost their volunteer retention.
Q: Why did you choose to go to Molloy?
A: So my sister went to Molloy, and she was in the business department also, and she talked about how much she loved it. Everyone was so welcoming there, so helpful there.
Molloy was my first choice. And I was like, ‘You know what, I’m going there.’
The business department has been so helpful with getting internships jobs. My sister was able to get a job right out of college, which I [thought] is going be so helpful for the future. So that’s where I decided on.
Q: Tell me about your internship responsibilities with the Chamber of Commerce.
A: I work with the database. So we’ll get applications in from small businesses in the area, and I will help put it into our database. I will update information as Ed [Asip, Chamber president] sends it to me.
From there, I have to get emails, Instagrams, addresses, phone numbers, anything. I will call these businesses, and from there, I’m constantly updating. It’s always changing. So I’m constantly on the phone with all these small businesses.
It’s great interacting. Everyone is super sweet. All these businesses in the Rockville Centre area are amazing. I will ask them for updated information, whether it’s their phone number or email, [and] I’ll answer any questions they may have.
Q: What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned during your internship?
A: Honestly, it’s Microsoft Excel. We use Excel for a lot of things, and everyone keeps telling me Excel is so important in the business world. It is truly so important. You’re going to need it for everything, honestly, and it’s trying to figure out how Excel works, why it’s so important.
On Excel, you can do so many different things, and we use it for everything, like we have different sheets for different things.
Q: What does it mean to you to be a part of the collaboration between Molloy and the Chamber of Commerce?
A: So communiversity is a big part, and honestly, it’s fantastic. We want to try get the students of Molloy to come into Rockville Centre. I know, since I started going to Molloy, me and my friends are constantly in Rockville Centre.
It’s beautiful here, like the restaurants, the houses, the shops, you can go into anywhere, and it’s gorgeous. We just want people to understand how amazing Rockville Centre is. It’s like a community. We want faculty and students, professors to come into Rockville Centre and to see the shops, to support the small businesses in the area. That’s what it’s all about.
