Molloy Opens Center for Multicultural and Intercultural Affairs
On October 21st the University opened its new Center for Multicultural & Intercultural Affairs. The opening celebration included a morning reception and ribbon cutting for the new space. The dedicated Center, overseen by the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, aims to promote understanding and collaboration among the diverse cultures present on our campus.
“Multicultural Centers have been around since the 1960s and 70s, emerging as institutions began diversifying at the end of Jim Crow segregation and during the Civil Rights Movement, said Vice President for Mission Integration and Inclusion, Donald “DJ” Mitchell, Jr., Ph.D., CDE.® “”Molloy, founded in 1955 as a Catholic, Dominican women’s college, didn’t have an immediate need for such a center. But today, as you look across our campus, our students represent the rich diversity of the world. In fact, this year we became a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the shifting demographics of our student body. Yet, our mission remains unchanged, and initiatives like the Center for Multicultural and Intercultural Affairs enable us to live out that mission by providing students with a space where they feel seen and represented as they pursue their education.”
Later that same day there was an evening fundraiser for the Center. Ghanaian Jazz Pianist/ Composer Victor Dey Jr. and friends took the stage at the Madison Theatre and continued the opening celebration.
