Computer Information Systems is the application of technology in managing the needs of businesses, nonprofits, and governments. Unlike Computer Science, where it focuses on designing new algorithms, Computer Information Systems focuses on using algorithms to solve problems.
Students entering the Computer Information Systems program take a broad mixture of courses in Computer Science, Accounting, Business, Economics and Math. Courses include Programming, Database Management, Networks, Introduction to Business, Principles of Marketing, Macroeconomics and Elementary Statistics. Having a basic foundation on these disciplines prepare students with technical, business and communication skills to address business’ specific needs such as choosing the best technologies to operate within a business environment. The flexibility of the program allows students who are more technical to take classes such as artificial intelligence and operating systems to supplement the CIS core. We offer students opportunities to do internships, and we encourage them to pursue a second major or minor in another discipline since CIS majors are employed in every sector of the economy.
Students leaving the program will have the knowledge and experience to allow them to help create, implement and maintain software and procedures to service companies of all sizes.
New students entering the Computer Information Systems program expect to take a mixture of Computer Science, Business, Marketing, Economic and Math courses.
