  • Designing Inclusive Syllabi Part I: The Why

    Friday, February 21, 2025

    9:30am via Zoom

    Presented by: Kate Myers-Coffman, PhD, MT-BC (they/she)

In this online workshop, attendees will gain a foundational understanding for using an anti-oppressive lens when designing inclusive syllabi. Some questions we will explore include: What encompasses an anti-oppressive lens? How do we unpack harmful internalized narratives and identify the oppressive ways these narratives show up in syllabi? To assist in these efforts, attendees will: a) identify and unpack biases and beliefs rooted in lived experiences by reflecting on personal histories with education and syllabi; b) review characteristics of white supremacy culture, ableism, cis/sexism, and classism that can show up in syllabi and understand how these characteristics oppress students representing diverse intersectional identities; c) apply this knowledge by deconstructing oppressive discourse and policies found in sample syllabi.

  • Antiableism and access at Molloy

    Tuesday, March 4, 2025

    2:00pm

    Hagan 239/Zoom

    Presented by: Hia Datta

Antiableist ideologies help counter age old ableist practices, and increase access to education for dis/differently abled and marginalized students in higher education. Ableist and elitist lenses in U.S. higher education, designed for “traditional” students, has made it possible for young, able-bodied/ minded, financially-resourced, White, cisgendered, straight male students to access educational resources more easily than those who do not enjoy these privileges. Universities are reflecting on their ableist set-up both in their physical spaces as well as their academic regulations and how they create barriers for dis/ differently abled students in order to reexamine how we operationalize higher education. In this workshop, we hope not only to discuss and reflect on what such practices may be, but also rely on our panelists to give us hands on guidance and highlight the support available to faculty to change these ableist practices in how we approach pedagogy through case studies and group work.

This online workshop is a follow up to those who attended the Designing Inclusive Syllabi Part I: The Why workshop. Example strategies will touch on: a) attendance, participation, and assignment policies; b) assignment and curriculum design; c) grading and ungrading approaches; d) tone and discourse in syllabi; and e) navigating the delicate balance between flexibility and boundary-setting.
