The following Summer Institute is available for graduate credit only and entirely online.

This course is for any world language teachers interested in teaching foreign language in the elementary school (FLES), improving their FLES program, or simply in improving their world language teaching using FLES methodologies. Students will create thematic units, view successful FLES classrooms, explore new uses of technology for language learning, share innovative ideas on WL teaching and learning, and develop a portfolio of linguistic and cultural resources for everyday use in FLES teaching.

After completing this 3-credit graduate online course, teachers will be able to apply for the foreign language in elementary school (FLES) Grades 1-6 Extension through the New York State Education Department.

The course is offered at the discounted tuition rate of $945 for the course. The discount is automatically given.  The discount is given with the understanding that it is only for teachers who possess a valid New York State Teaching Certificate and are not pursuing a master's degree with Molloy University. No other discounts are offered. Students and teachers who are pursuing a master's degree at Molloy University are not eligible to enroll in the course at the discounted rate.

Molloy University uses a Learning Management System or online platform called Canvas. This course will be fully online using Canvas. The course is not taught in "real time", meaning students do not have to log in at a set time. Therefore, you do not have to attend at a given time. You can log on at any time to take the course.

Once you have registered for your first course, you will be emailed a Molloy email account. Once you receive your Molloy email account, you will be sent instructions to set-up your permanent account. (If you do not receive the email within 3 business days of registering for your first course please check your spam folder or contact Krista Lombardo by email at klombardo@molloy.edu.  You can log in at: www.molloy.edu/canvas using your permanent Username and Password. Once you log in to your Canvas account you can look up the required text(s) for the course, as well as any assignments that the instructor may have posted.

 Application and Registration

The registration process is rather simple because you are not applying for a Molloy degree. There is an online application that you need to complete, but that is for information purposes only. Everyone is accepted as long as you are a NY certified teacher. There is no application fee and GREs are not required. If you are enrolling at Molloy for the first time, it will take a few days to process your application/registration form online.  Once you register for the first time you will be sent an email within one to two business days with your username to login your student account to access the system for future registrations and to access Canvas, our online learning platform.   Please note: this course usually closes out very quickly. While you can register up to a week before the course start date, it is advisable to register as close to the start of registration as possible to avoid being closed-out.   Click here for Application and Registration Instructions.

Applying for FLES Certification
After you have completed the course you can apply for FLES certification through the TEACH online system with NYS by going to the following webpage: NYS Office of Teaching Initiatives  and access the TEACH Online System. From there you would either create a TEACH account or sign-in to a TEACH account that you may already have. Once you are on the TEACH Online Homepage look under, "Online Application" and click, "Apply for Certificate".

Please note that you are applying through an individual pathway, not through a degree program because you did not take a degree. Therefore, there is no program code needed for the school. You just answer, "No, I have not completed, nor am I enrolled in, an Approved Teacher Preparation Program at a New York State College or University for this certificate and this type", when the school code is requested.

You will need to pay a $100 fee and have your transcript from Molloy sent to NYS. When ordering the transcript from Molloy, you will need to request that your Social Security number and Date of Birth appear on the transcript. Due to FERPA regulations, the Registrar cannot print that information on transcripts without the consent of the student requesting. When filling out the request form, write down your request on the top right of the form.

To Request an Official Transcript:
Students and alumni may request transcripts online.
