Ed Tech Specialist Certification

Teachers, earn an additional certification as an Educational Technology Specialist without having to earn another Master's Degree!

The Educational Technology Specialist Certification Pathway: Additional Classroom Teaching Certificate courses are designed for teachers who hold a valid New York State Teaching Certificate and wish to earn Educational Technology Specialist Certification without having to earn an additional degree. Teachers can take these courses for professional development without going for certification. Candidates for certification must meet certain Content Core requirements and must also meet any non-coursework requirements, such as the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations and fingerprint clearance, as specified.

Ten (10) graduate credit courses (3 credits each, 30 credits total) are offered in the program to assist teachers in meeting the Content course requirements. New York State may accept up to 6 credits of educational technology course work from previous undergraduate or graduate courses.  The ten (10) courses are:

- EDU 5301 - Analyzing Digital Media in Teaching and Learning           
- EDU 5302  - Interdisciplinary Curriculum and Methods In Educational Technology
- EDU 5230  - Instructional Applications of the Internet - Integrating Digital Age Tools into Instruction, Classroom Management, Communication, and Collaboration
- EDU 5303  - Assessment Tools in Educational Technology
- EDU 5304  - Educational Website Design and Video Integration, Distance Learning, Blended and Virtual Schools
- EDU 5305  - Mobile Learning and Teaching With Social Media For Educational Technology Courses       
- EDU 5306 - Assistive and Adaptive Technology for Students with Special Needs
- EDU 5307 - Adapting Technology for ELL and Culturally Diverse Students in Inclusive Classrooms
- EDU 5308 - Best Practices in Educational Technology Leadership

Please note that all of the courses are part of our graduate education master's degree program and the only difference in the coursework is that there are no requirements for field study or student teaching. NYS does not require teachers who are NYS certified to complete student teaching again when they are applying for additional certification.  The program is only open to teachers who are already NYS certified and have a master's degree.

None of the courses in the program have any prerequisites. Therefore, the courses can be taken in any order and you can take as many or as few courses as you would like to take at a time. You can start the program at any time.

Since this is a pathway to certification and does not lead to a degree, you must go to the NYS Office of Teaching Initiatives webpage and file for Educational Technology Specialist certification. Do this as soon as possible - even before you enroll in any courses! You will be notified of anything additional you need to take or any missing requirements.

We do recommend teachers taking the Safety Net Educational Technology Specialist CST (971) test after all coursework is complete.

Practicum, Field study, Observations or Student Teaching
Under this pathway you are not required to do a practicum, field study, observations or student teaching. NYS does not require teachers who are NYS certified to complete student teaching again when they are applying for additional certification.

Course Schedule and Modality
Online asynchronous course content is delivered online with no required virtual or instructional site meetings.  The course has a start date and an end date, but no set time you must log on to the course. You must log on to Canvas on the first day of class and continue to do so on a regular basis to complete assignments and participate in discussions in the time allotted by the professor.    

The fall schedule is posted on the website in May.  The spring schedule is posted in October. The summer schedule is posted in February.

The courses will be taught using an online platform at Molloy called Canvas. Please see the "Canvas" link under the "explore" column for details on Canvas.

Application and Registration Process
The program does not have traditional deadline dates because courses are offered throughout the year and they do not follow a semester schedule. There are no defined overall start and end dates for the program. The application and registration process is rather simple because you are not applying for a Molloy degree. There is an online application that you need to complete, but that is for information purposes only. Everyone is accepted as long as you are a NY certified teacher. There is no application fee and GREs are not required. If you are enrolling in the program for the first time, it will take a few days to process your application online.  You will be emailed a user name and password and then you just go into our online registration system and register for the particular course(s) that you wish to take at that time. 

You should register at least a week before the course start date at the latest in order to register for the first time. After that you can register up until the day before the class, but then you run the risk that a course could be full- our courses do close.

Tuition
The tuition is discounted to $945 per course. There are no application or course fees. This is a discounted tuition rate. Tuition is normally about $4,000 per 3-credit graduate course. The tuition is off-set by a professional development scholarship that is given to those teachers who already possess a master's degree and are not pursuing a master's degree with Molloy University. There are no other discounts given. Students and teachers who are pursuing a master's degree at Molloy University are not eligible to enroll in this program at the discounted rate.

Payment for Courses
You will not be able to pay at the time of registration. Instead you will be billed and bills are generally sent out once a month in the middle of the month. However, you may login to your account 1 full business day after you register to pay for your course(s). 

Visit Lion's Den (Molloy's registration system) at: https://lionsden.molloy.edu/ICS/Professional_Studies/  and use your Username and Password to login. Click on the 'My Finance' tab and then click on 'My Account Info' to view your statement and pay your bill online. Payment can be made using: MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or ACH check.

Requirements

Please note: Your transcripts can only be evaluated online through the TEACH system, 518.474.3901. It is your responsibility to make sure that all requirements for certification have been met.

CTLE Credit
